A Broward County man, David Lee Pitts, has been sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Raag Singhal for charges related to drug distribution and illegal firearm possession.

Pitts, aged 38, pled guilty on September 4, 2024. His offenses included the intent to distribute cocaine, fentanyl, and oxycodone as well as possessing a firearm illegally. This conviction comes after previous felony convictions.

The case unfolded on April 26, 2024, when law enforcement observed Pitts at a storage facility in Pompano, Florida. He transferred two bags suspected of containing illegal drugs from his storage unit to his car. Upon noticing law enforcement presence at the facility's main gate, Pitts attempted to flee on foot. During the chase, he discarded the bags onto a nearby roof but was eventually apprehended by officers who recovered the drugs.

A subsequent search of Pitts' storage unit revealed additional quantities of cocaine and flakka along with fentanyl, oxycodone, and a Glock pistol with ammunition.

U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida announced the sentencing alongside Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter of the DEA's Miami Field Division.

The investigation involved collaboration between DEA Miami and the Broward Sheriff's Office while Assistant U.S. Attorney Latoya C. Brown prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce gun violence and violent crime through community collaboration and strategic enforcement priorities. More information about PSN can be found at Justice.gov/PSN.
