The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has concluded its process of interviewing five applicants for the vacancy in the Seventh Judicial District Court. The commission has nominated three finalists, whose names will be forwarded to Governor Lombardo. The governor is expected to make an appointment within thirty days of receiving the nominees.
The vacancy in Department 2 arose following the retirement of Judge Gary Fairman. Eligible candidates were required to be at least 25 years old, have ten years of legal experience, and possess two years of legal practice and residency in Nevada.
Governor Lombardo's deadline for appointing a new judge is April 10, 2025. All district court judges in Nevada currently serve terms that expire on January 4, 2027.
The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection consists of seven permanent members and two temporary members for each selection cycle. Permanent members include the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Appointments must ensure no more than two permanent members belong to the same political party or county. Temporary members are appointed specifically for each selection process and their terms conclude with it.
