Shannon T. Hanson, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, announced that Justin Cabot, a 52-year-old resident of Newark, was found guilty of bank robbery after a two-day trial in federal court. The trial was overseen by Chief United States District Judge Colm F. Connolly.
Evidence and witness testimony revealed that on June 24, 2022, Cabot entered the Bank of Delmarva in Laurel, Delaware wearing a bright yellow shirt and presented a demand note to the teller on their first day at the branch. He issued additional verbal threats instructing the teller to use large bills and to hurry. The teller complied by filling a bag provided by Cabot with money and a GPS tracking device. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses captured Cabot leaving the area and removing his yellow shirt. He was apprehended five days later in Salisbury, Maryland.
"Cabot’s actions demonstrated his disregard for the rule of law," said Acting U.S. Attorney Hanson. "While no one was injured here, bank robbery is inherently dangerous to innocent bystanders and bank staff."
FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno commented on the conviction: "Cabot’s use of threat and intimidation terrified employees of the bank he robbed. This conviction should serve as a reminder that the FBI will not waver when it comes to protecting Delaware and taking dangerous criminals off the streets."
Cabot faces up to 20 years in prison with Chief Judge Connolly set to determine his sentence after reviewing relevant guidelines and factors.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eli H. Klein and Edmond Falgowski following an investigation conducted by the Laurel Police Department and FBI’s Delaware Violent Crime and Safe Streets Task Force, with support from Wicomico County Sheriff's Department.
