Edward Keith Perkins, a 31-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Following his prison term, Perkins will be subject to three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that on August 19, 2024, Perkins shipped a box containing approximately 4.43 kilograms of methamphetamine from California to an address on Virginia Street in Charleston, West Virginia. Three days later, he traveled to the location where law enforcement intercepted him after a passenger retrieved the package and placed it in the vehicle's trunk. Perkins fled but was subsequently apprehended. He admitted that the package also contained about 50 grams of fentanyl along with the methamphetamine.
Perkins' criminal record includes convictions for assault, carjacking, and carrying a concealed weapon.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston stated: "The investigation in this case revealed that the defendant distributed nearly 20 pounds of methamphetamine and over 100 grams of fentanyl that he shipped from California to West Virginia and Tennessee." She emphasized that "today’s sentence is the result of this office’s commitment to work closely with our law enforcement partners and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent to keep our communities safe."
The investigative efforts were led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), which includes several local police departments and sheriff's offices.
United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin delivered the sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys JC MacCallum and Alexander A. Redmon.
