A federal grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, has indicted an individual on charges related to drug trafficking and firearms offenses. The indictment was announced on March 4, 2025.

U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky, along with other officials from the ATF Louisville Field Division, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement, and the Louisville Metro Police Department, disclosed the details of the case.

The individual charged is Edi Diaz-Lopez, also known as Edy Diaz-Lopez, a 30-year-old Mexican citizen. He faces charges for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of firearms by a prohibited person in furtherance of drug trafficking. On January 3, 2025, Diaz-Lopez allegedly possessed two firearms: a Phoenix .25 caliber pistol and a Bryco model 59 nine-millimeter pistol. His status as an illegal alien prohibits him from possessing firearms in the United States.

Diaz-Lopez appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Kentucky on March 6, 2025. He was ordered to be detained pending trial. If found guilty, he could face up to 40 years in prison. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge based on guidelines and statutory factors.

The investigation involves multiple agencies including ATF, HSI, ICE/ERO, and LMPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Dahl is leading the prosecution.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
