John Christopher Barrilleaux, a social worker from Thibodaux, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for healthcare fraud. Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced the sentencing on February 27, 2025. Barrilleaux had previously pleaded guilty to violating 18 U.S.C. § 1347.
Court documents revealed that between 2008 and 2024, Barrilleaux submitted false claims to private insurance companies for services not rendered. To support these fraudulent claims, he fabricated patient notes and sent them to the insurers.
United States District Judge Barry Ashe handed down the sentence of 30 months in prison with an additional three years of supervised release. Barrilleaux is also required to pay $4,592,650 in restitution to the affected companies and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
Acting U.S Attorney Simpson commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their role in investigating the case. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas D. Moses from the Financial Crimes Unit and Health Care Fraud Coordinator, along with Trial Attorney Kelly Z. Walters from the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division’s Fraud Section.
