The Maine Judicial Branch has issued a warning regarding fraudulent telephone calls impersonating law enforcement officials. These calls falsely demand payment over the phone, claiming that the recipient failed to report for jury duty. The scammers may assert that the call concerns jury service in a Judicial Branch court and, if questioned, might alter their story to suggest it pertains to federal court jury service or selection.

The Judicial Branch emphasizes that neither court staff nor law enforcement will request personal or financial information or money over the phone. They also do not threaten individuals who fail to comply with such demands. Typically, communication from the Judicial Branch regarding jury service is conducted via U.S. Mail.

"If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the courts or law enforcement and demanding money, end the call immediately," advised Barbara Cardone, Director of Legal Affairs and Public Relations for the Judicial Branch. She cautioned against sending money or providing personal or financial details in response to these types of calls or emails.

For further inquiries, Barbara Cardone can be contacted at her office number 207-213-2803 or via email at Barbara.Cardone@courts.maine.gov.
