Aaron Jarrett, 36, was arraigned in the 91st District Court in Sault Ste. Marie on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and unlawful imprisonment. The charges stem from an alleged sexual assault of a woman in Chippewa County in May 2016. Jarrett, who was residing in Clark County, Washington, was extradited to Michigan by the U.S. Marshals Service under Operation Survivor Justice.
The Chippewa County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Jarrett with four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of unlawful imprisonment shortly after the incident. The former carries a potential life sentence, while the latter is punishable by up to 15 years.
Operation Survivor Justice aims to locate and return fugitives accused of sexual assaults to Michigan. It is a collaborative effort between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The operation received $1 million in state funding last year for extraditions.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel stated, “In the six months since we announced Operation Survivor Justice, my office has worked with county prosecutors across the state and the U.S. Marshals Service to extradite over a dozen people accused of horrific sexual assaults.” She emphasized her commitment to ensuring community safety and accountability for such crimes.
Jarrett's bond is set at $500,000. He is scheduled for a probable cause conference on March 13 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a preliminary exam on March 20 at 9:30 a.m.
