A Roanoke man has been sentenced to 108 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm, which he used to shoot another individual. James Aaron Haburn, aged 32, was found guilty of one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following his bench trial in October 2024.
Court documents and trial evidence revealed that police encountered Haburn during a traffic stop in November 2022. They discovered a stolen Smith & Wesson pistol tucked into his waistband. Further investigation showed that Haburn had used the same weapon to shoot a man in the back after an altercation outside a Roanoke business just 34 hours prior.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee and Anthony Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The case was investigated by the Roanoke City Police Department along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly McGann prosecuted the case.
