A federal inmate has received an additional nine-year prison sentence for assaulting another inmate. The incident occurred in 2022 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Thomson, Illinois, where Julian Breal attacked a fellow inmate by repeatedly kicking and punching him over several minutes. The victim sustained serious injuries that required hospital treatment and surgery.

Julian Breal, aged 47, was convicted last year of assault causing serious bodily injury. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston handed down the nine-year sentence to be served consecutively to Breal's current term in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The sentencing announcement was made by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, along with Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI's Chicago Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Maveus and Vincenza L. Tomlinson represented the government in this case.
