A Denton woman, Tiffane Chantial Volz, has been sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for her involvement in a fatal fentanyl overdose case. This was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr. Volz, aged 37, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl. Her sentencing was carried out by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant on February 18, 2025.

Courtney Green, a co-defendant and also from Denton, faced similar charges and received a sentence of 240 months in federal prison on January 30, 2025. Judge Mazzant presided over both cases.

The court proceedings revealed that on April 15, 2023, law enforcement responded to an overdose death in Celina, Texas. The autopsy indicated the victim succumbed to pulmonary congestion and edema due to fentanyl toxicity. Investigations uncovered communications between the victim and Green about distributing prescription pills and identified Volz as Green's supplier.

In light of this case and similar incidents nationwide, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued a Public Safety Alert regarding the increased lethality of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl and methamphetamine. This alert is part of DEA’s One Pill Can Kill Public Awareness Campaign aimed at educating Americans about the dangers posed by these fake pills produced by criminal networks.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Celina Police Department, Denton County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew T. Johnson prosecuted the case.
