The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Montana has announced that Jesse Laslovich, who has served as the chief federal law enforcement officer since June 2022, has stepped down from his position. President Joe Biden nominated Laslovich on January 31, 2022, and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 17, 2022.
During his tenure, Laslovich oversaw federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation in Montana. The district's offices are located in Helena, Great Falls, Missoula, Butte, and Billings.
"It has been the honor of my life to serve as the United States Attorney for the state that raised me," said Laslovich. He expressed gratitude to his colleagues and law enforcement partners at various levels for their dedication to upholding the law.
Laslovich focused on prosecuting drug trafficking and violent crimes on Montana's Indian Reservations under federal jurisdiction. His office built strong partnerships with other agencies to address violent crimes through initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF). Efforts were also made to protect children from predators and combat fraud against vulnerable populations.
He emphasized collaboration with law enforcement agencies across local, state, tribal, and federal levels. Meetings with tribal leadership were held regularly to discuss pertinent issues.
A significant case during his term involved dismantling a multi-state drug trafficking organization based on Crow Indian Reservation property known as Spear Siding. This operation resulted in convictions of 27 individuals involved in methamphetamine and fentanyl distribution linked to suppliers in Washington and a Mexican cartel.
Additionally, a six-month enforcement initiative led by the DEA identified hot spots for drug-related crime on reservations like Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services worked with them leading to multiple indictments.
Federal firearms prosecutions increased significantly during Laslovich's term compared to previous years. An average of 111 cases per year involving illegal possession was recorded from 2022 through 2024 compared with an average of 83 cases per year from 2014 to 2021.
Laslovich also launched United Against Hate in Montana—a Justice Department initiative aimed at preventing hate crimes through community engagement. A successful prosecution under this initiative involved a Basin man sentenced to prison for firing an assault rifle at a residence due to bias against sexual orientation.
The office continued its work defending U.S interests in litigation while collecting debts owed by entities such as St Peter’s Health which settled allegations related to false claims acts violations amounting $10 million plus dollars payment resolution reached last year (2024).
