Steve Banks, a 49-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been indicted on charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession. The indictment was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson on February 14, 2025.
Banks faces three counts: Count 1 involves possession with intent to distribute over 280 grams of crack cocaine, violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act; Count 2 charges him as a felon in possession of a firearm under the Federal Gun Control Act; and Count 3 accuses him of possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
For the first count, Banks could face a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years up to life imprisonment, along with fines reaching $10 million and at least five years of supervised release. The second count carries a maximum penalty of fifteen years in prison, fines up to $250,000, and three years supervised release. For the third count, he faces another mandatory minimum sentence of five years up to life imprisonment, fines up to $250,000, and five years supervised release.
The indictment alleges that Banks conspired with others to distribute crack cocaine within the Eastern District of Louisiana from an unspecified date before September 2024 until October 21, 2024. On that date, he allegedly possessed over 280 grams of crack cocaine and three firearms: a Zastava Model ZPAP85 semi-automatic rifle, a Glock Model 22 pistol with an extended magazine reported stolen, and a Glock Model 17Gen5 pistol.
Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson emphasized that "the indictment is merely an allegation" and that guilt must be established beyond reasonable doubt.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department's strategy for PSN includes fostering community trust and legitimacy while supporting organizations that prevent violence.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation alongside the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Rachal Cassagne from the Narcotics Unit is leading the prosecution.
