Alexander M.M. Uballez U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez has announced his resignation at the request of President Donald J. Trump, joining over 20 U.S. Attorneys stepping down amid the presidential transition.

"Today, I say farewell to a Department that I love," Uballez stated. "Together, we have made our community safer by delivering swift and certain justice to the most prolific violent offenders, human and drug traffickers, and child abusers." He emphasized efforts in violence prevention and support for those re-entering society post-incarceration.

Nominated by President Joseph R. Biden on January 26, 2022, and confirmed by the Senate on May 17, 2022, Uballez prioritized restructuring approaches to violent crime during his tenure. His initiatives included collaborating with Albuquerque Community Safety’s Violence Intervention Program under Project Safe Neighborhoods to address gun violence directly.

Uballez also focused on modernizing operations within the U.S. Attorney's Office and expanding resources for Tribal communities. His work transitioned office procedures from paper files to digital systems.

Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque field office said, "Alex Uballez has served the people of New Mexico with honor and distinction as U.S. Attorney...There is no doubt his work has made a positive impact on our community."

Brendan Iber from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives praised Uballez's alignment with law enforcement goals: "The ultimate goal...is to ensure that the great citizens of New Mexico can feel safe...US Attorney Uballez was steadfast with this goal."

Margaret A. Katze commended Uballez's leadership style: “Throughout his tenure...His focus on community safety was evident in his deliberate, data-driven prosecutorial decisions.”

Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman noted their strong collaboration: “He has been a great leader for the people of New Mexico.”

Uballez also contributed at a senior policy level within the Department of Justice through roles advising Attorney General Merrick Garland on various issues including Native American matters and organized crime.

Holland S. Kastrin will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney following Uballez’s departure until a new nomination is confirmed by the Senate.
