Two former officers from the Bethany Beach Police Department have pleaded guilty to wire fraud, related to their theft of overtime funds. This announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Shannon T. Hanson, following acceptance of their pleas by Chief U.S. District Judge Colm F. Connolly.

Michael Redmon, aged 58 and residing in Selbyville, along with Darin Cathell, aged 49 from Frankford, were involved in falsely claiming overtime shifts they did not work over several years. According to court documents, Redmon claimed at least 174 shifts amounting to 760 hours and $81,890. Cathell claimed at least 185 shifts totaling 800 hours and $67,970. A portion of these funds originated from federal grants.

Acting U.S. Attorney Hanson remarked on the breach of trust stating, “Taking the oath to protect and serve is a sacred trust... These officers failed to do that." She added that her office will hold accountable those who betray their duties while thanking both the FBI and Delaware Attorney General’s Office for their investigative efforts.

FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno commented on the situation saying, "The defendants profited handsomely by abusing their positions... The FBI is committed to rooting out corruption."

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings emphasized the broader impact of such actions: “Police officers — and especially police leaders — who commit crimes... harm every peace officer."

Both Redmon and Cathell face a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison with sentencing scheduled for August 12, 2025. Chief Judge Connolly will determine their sentences after reviewing applicable guidelines.

The case is under investigation by the FBI and Delaware Attorney General’s Office with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace.
