United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg has announced an indictment against Michel Serrano, Julio Sanchez, and Angel Mares for their alleged involvement in a theft organization targeting luxury vehicles. The charges include conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles and the sale and possession of stolen motor vehicles.
Michel Serrano, aged 34 from Lehigh Acres, faces additional charges of interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 10 years in federal prison. Julio Sanchez, aged 35 from Redwood City, California, and Angel Mares, aged 56 from San Jose, California, each face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison if convicted.
The indictment also seeks forfeiture orders against the three individuals for any property traceable to the proceeds of these crimes and an order equivalent to the amount gained from these activities.
According to court documents, between June 2020 and May 2021, the defendants allegedly stole high-end vehicles across Florida. These thefts occurred at car dealerships, residences, residential parking garages, and other businesses. The group reportedly altered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) before transporting the cars across state lines with plans to sell them. Buyers received full vehicle registration and titles within California for an additional fee. Payments were made through cash or checks.
It is important to note that an indictment is a formal accusation but does not imply guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
The investigation was conducted by several law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Polk County Sheriff's Office, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office among others. Assistant United States Attorney Tiffany E. Fields will prosecute this case.
