Christopher McCarty, a 33-year-old resident of Manhattan, has pleaded guilty to mailing a letter that contained threats to kill two New York State judges. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

McCarty admitted that between May and June 2023, while incarcerated at Auburn Correctional Facility in Auburn, New York, he sent a threatening letter on or about May 31, 2023. The letter was addressed to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and stated his intention to kill two judges who had presided over his case upon his release from prison.

Sentencing is set for June 10, 2025, before Senior United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby. McCarty could face up to five years in prison, followed by up to three years of post-release supervision and a fine reaching $250,000.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force along with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss is handling the prosecution.
