California Attorney General Rob Bonta has responded to President Trump's executive order aimed at ending access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. In a statement, Bonta described the order as "cruel and irresponsible," arguing that it would further marginalize vulnerable youth and jeopardize their health.
Bonta emphasized the right of all Americans to equal protection under the law, including access to healthcare without discrimination. He stated, "California will continue to be a safe haven for those who seek the care they need in order to be their authentic selves."
The Attorney General highlighted California's commitment to promoting healthcare access through state laws such as the Transgender, Gender Diverse, and Intersex (TGI) Inclusive Care Act. He assured that despite the federal order, these protections remain intact in California. "My office and I will continue to defend California law and stand up for the rights of all who seek this critical, lifesaving care and the people who support them," Bonta said.
Bonta also noted that his office is reviewing the executive order and monitoring its implementation closely. He reassured Californians that "the California Department of Justice will continue to stand up for our people and our values."
Resources are available for transgender youth and the LGBTQ+ community in California, including information on health equity, civil rights, and insurance coverage specific to transgender individuals.
For those who believe their rights are being violated by the enforcement of this executive order, complaints can be filed with either the California Attorney General’s Office or the California Civil Rights Department.
