California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a statement in response to President Trump's recent executive order targeting the LGBTQ+ community. Bonta emphasized the protection of LGBTQ+ rights under California law and the U.S. Constitution.
"All individuals, regardless of who they are or who they love, deserve to be recognized and treated equally," said Bonta. He assured that in California, the LGBTQ+ community is protected by state laws and the state's constitution.
Bonta highlighted that federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have deemed discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals unlawful. "We are keeping a close eye on how this Executive Order is implemented and related actions by the Trump Administration," he stated. He stressed that fundamental rights cannot be eliminated by executive order nor can federal agencies be ordered to violate the law.
Bonta reminded agencies receiving state funding about their obligation to protect members of the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination and harassment. "I am committed to defending California's people and values," he affirmed.
California law prohibits gender identity discrimination and ensures safe educational environments free from harassment. It also protects access to gender-affirming healthcare services and allows for self-selection of gender identity on official documents.
Complaints regarding violations related to this executive order can be filed with either the California Attorney General’s Office or the California Civil Rights Department. Various resources for support are available through several state departments.
