Julie and Stephen Maskell, both residents of Eden, Vermont, face separate felony charges of Medicaid Fraud, as announced by the Attorney General’s Office. The charges, stemming from an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit (MFRAU), accuse Stephen Maskell of unauthorized care provision to a Medicaid recipient. This arrangement allegedly allowed Julie Maskell to submit false timesheets, claiming compensation from Vermont Medicaid for care she did not provide.
During an arraignment on April 2, 2025, in the Vermont Superior Court, Lamoille Criminal Division, Stephen Maskell entered a plea of not guilty. Judge Benjamin Battles, presiding over the case, ordered his release under specific conditions. Earlier, on February 26, 2025, Julie Maskell also pleaded not guilty at her arraignment, presided over by Judge Mary Morrisey, who similarly ordered her release under conditions.
The Attorney General’s Office reminds the public that those charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
