Attorney General Merrick B. Garland delivered his farewell address, reflecting on his tenure and expressing gratitude to colleagues and family. Garland emphasized the importance of integrity and adherence to the rule of law within the Department of Justice.

"Thank you, Lisa. There is no one I would rather have worked with day in and day out to lead this Department," he said, acknowledging Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco's contributions.

Garland recalled his long association with the department, starting over four decades ago as "the grandson of immigrants." He expressed admiration for DOJ employees who are committed to doing what is right rather than what is politically expedient or comfortable.

He highlighted the department's achievements over the past four years, including efforts to keep communities safe, protect civil rights, and uphold justice. "I am simply in awe of what the public servants of this Department — across the country and around the world — have done," he stated.

Garland stressed that law enforcement decisions should be based solely on facts and law, ensuring fairness in justice administration. He noted that departmental norms developed post-Watergate scandal are crucial for maintaining independence from political influence.

"We know that only an independent Justice Department can protect the safety and civil rights of everyone in our country," Garland remarked.

Reflecting on challenges faced by DOJ employees, he acknowledged their dedication amid criticism: "You have worked to pursue justice — not politics."

As he concluded his address, Garland expressed pride in serving alongside DOJ personnel: "I could not be more honored than to have served alongside you as Attorney General."
