An Albuquerque man, Dakota Briscoe, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison following a violent crime spree that began with a double murder in September 2020. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the conviction after Briscoe was found guilty of two counts of attempted carjacking, one count of carjacking, and possession and use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

Evidence presented at trial showed that on September 7, 2020, Briscoe used a tan handgun in several violent acts. These included the double homicide where the victims were found in a burning vehicle in South Valley. Although the firearm was not recovered, witness testimonies placed Briscoe with the weapon, and .45 caliber casings were found at crime scenes.

The crime spree started with the homicides and led to armed carjackings as Briscoe attempted to evade capture. He targeted vulnerable individuals, including women.

Briscoe managed to avoid arrest initially but was apprehended on September 16, 2020. He was stopped at a United States Border Patrol checkpoint while driving an unregistered white van without license plates. During this encounter, he exhibited nervous behavior and provided his brother’s name due to an active warrant for his brother's failure to appear in New Mexico court. This led to his arrest under his brother's identity.

Upon release from prison, Briscoe will face four years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office made the announcement today.

The case was investigated by the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from several law enforcement agencies including the Albuquerque Police Department and U.S. Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jaymie L. Roybal and Jon Stanford prosecuted the case.
