Darrion Young, a 40-year-old resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 207 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Brandon S. Long after pleading guilty to multiple charges outlined in the indictment against him. Following his incarceration, Young will be on supervised release for four years and is required to pay a $600 mandatory special assessment fee.
Young faced several charges including carjacking, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, distribution and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Court documents reveal that on January 13, 2022, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) responded to an incident involving carjacking near 1527 Saint Phillip Street. The victim reported that Young forcibly took her vehicle at gunpoint. The following day, Young was seen parked in the same Ford Fusion involved in the carjacking. A photo captured by surveillance confirmed it was the stolen vehicle.
FBI agents tracked the vehicle to Touro Street where they conducted surveillance. Young was later apprehended after driving away from Stephen Girard Street and Montegut Drive. During the search of the vehicle, law enforcement found a Smith & Wesson handgun along with cocaine, fentanyl, and MDMA pills.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community organizations. The FBI and NOPD led the investigation while Assistant United States Attorneys Maurice Landrieu and Mike Trummel handled prosecution duties.
