Attorney General Merrick B. Garland recently delivered remarks at a farewell event for FBI Director Christopher Wray, highlighting Wray's extensive career in public service and his contributions to the FBI and the nation.
Garland noted that before joining the FBI, Wray had already built a distinguished career. He served as a clerk for a federal judge, worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Atlanta, led the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, and was the Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General.
Despite having the opportunity to retire comfortably in Georgia, Wray chose to return to public service in 2017 by taking on the role of FBI Director. "Chris Wray is public spirited to the core," Garland stated.
Garland praised Wray's leadership qualities, emphasizing his commitment to fidelity, bravery, and integrity—qualities he shares with many FBI agents and analysts. Over four years of working together, Garland said he witnessed these attributes firsthand during their daily All Threats Briefings.
The Attorney General commended Wray for standing up for the FBI's 38,000 employees and defending special agents who faced threats while performing their duties. He also highlighted Wray's reputation within the White House Situation Room and among international law enforcement partners.
Garland recalled instances of Wray's leadership during crises such as a terrorist attack in New Orleans and a truck explosion in Las Vegas. These events exemplified how Wray guided the FBI in its mission to protect American safety daily.
Throughout his tenure, Wray emphasized partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies. "Everywhere I have gone," Garland said, "I have heard state and local law enforcement leaders praise their respective FBI field offices for their partnership."
Garland stressed that few positions are more crucial than that of FBI Director when it comes to safeguarding Americans. The role involves leading efforts against complex threats while maintaining independence from undue influence—a principle central to upholding rule of law.
In recognition of his service, Garland awarded Wray with the Edmund J. Randolph Award: "Director Wray...you have advanced the Justice Department’s central responsibility to uphold the rule of law."
The award inscription reads: "Edmund J. Randolph Award Presented to The Honorable Christopher Wray FBI Director U.S. Department of Justice In recognition of your outstanding service..."
Concluding his remarks, Garland expressed gratitude on behalf of various stakeholders including FBI agents and employees: "Thank you on behalf of...the American people whom you have served so honorably."
