Attorney General Merrick B. Garland recently delivered remarks at a farewell event for ATF Director Steve Dettelbach, highlighting his contributions during his tenure. Garland acknowledged the support of Dettelbach's family, stating, "All of us in public service know that our careers are made possible by the support of our families, who sacrifice so that we may serve."

Garland praised Dettelbach for advancing the mission of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) over the past two-and-a-half years. He noted Dettelbach's efforts in combating gun violence through various initiatives such as cracking down on criminal gun-trafficking pipelines and updating ATF regulations.

Under Dettelbach's leadership, partnerships with state and local law enforcement were strengthened. Garland mentioned that preliminary data indicates a substantial decline in murders nationwide for three consecutive years. The expansion of Crime Gun Intelligence Centers and the promotion of NIBIN, the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, were highlighted as significant achievements.

Garland emphasized Dettelbach's commitment to ensuring ATF regulations kept pace with evolving firearm technology. This included clarifying when a person is considered "engaged in the business" of dealing firearms and implementing provisions from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Garland also commended Dettelbach for organizing an Inaugural Gun Violence Survivor’s Summit to give a platform to those affected by gun violence. He remarked on Dettelbach's dedication to supporting ATF agents and honoring those who have sacrificed in service.

In conclusion, Garland expressed gratitude for Dettelbach's service: "You have earned the respect of ATF’s agents and staff — as well as of the Bureau’s many law enforcement partners across the country."
