U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani | U.S. Department of Justice

U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani has announced his resignation as the chief law enforcement officer for the Southern District of Texas, effective midnight on January 19. Hamdani reflected on his tenure, stating, "Serving as the 24th Presidentially Appointed U.S. Attorney for this incredible district has been the honor of a lifetime."

During his time in office, Hamdani managed one of the largest districts in the country, covering 44,000 square miles and representing over nine million people. He oversaw more than 400 employees, including approximately 200 Assistant U.S. Attorneys across seven offices.

Hamdani led the prosecution of over 10 thousand criminal cases against more than 12 thousand defendants while maintaining a high conviction rate. His efforts targeted various crimes such as fentanyl distribution, human smuggling, white-collar crime, and cybercrime.

The Civil Division under his leadership filed over 2,500 cases during fiscal years 2023-2024, achieving notable settlements like an $85 million agreement with a cardiac imaging company and a $15 million settlement with the Texas Medical Center.

Hamdani's office also focused on violent crime reduction through collaboration with the Department of Justice’s Violent Crime Initiative and other state-wide efforts targeting machine gun conversion devices. He emphasized tackling Mexican cartel-related violence and was involved in significant drug trafficking indictments.

Cybercrime was another focus area for Hamdani; he participated in conferences to address these issues and played a role in disrupting a botnet linked to Chinese hackers.

His work extended to national security matters, human smuggling organizations, and human trafficking cases. Efforts were made to hold accountable those committing crimes against children and elderly fraud schemes.

In October 2023, Attorney General Merrick Garland selected Hamdani for the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee where he advised on border security issues among other responsibilities.

Hamdani prioritized transparency about his office's work using social media platforms to communicate important messages. His approach was guided by what he termed the "mama rule," emphasizing protection akin to caring for one's own family members.

As he leaves his post, Hamdani acknowledges leading dedicated public servants committed to making Texas safer: “We love mercy, walk humbly and always, always seek justice.”
