U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert has announced his resignation, effective at midnight on January 11, 2025. Talbert served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California for two and a half years.
"It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California, the district where I served as a federal prosecutor for two decades," said Talbert. "I thank President Biden for nominating me to the position and am grateful to the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Alex Padilla, and Attorney General Merrick Garland for their support and confidence in me to lead this office of dedicated public servants."
The role of U.S. Attorney involves serving as the chief federal law enforcement officer responsible for prosecuting federal criminal cases and representing the United States in civil litigation within the district. The Eastern District encompasses 34 counties across Central Valley and Sierras with offices in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.
Upon Talbert's departure, Michele M. Beckwith will assume the position of Acting U.S. Attorney under the Vacancies Reform Act. Beckwith is an experienced federal prosecutor who previously served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney to Talbert.
Talbert's career spans over three decades with significant contributions during his tenure at various positions within the Department of Justice (DOJ). His leadership roles included acting as Interim U.S. Attorney twice before being confirmed by presidential appointment in June 2022.
At a national level, Talbert participated in several DOJ subcommittees including those focusing on civil rights and controlled substances prevention efforts.
During his time in office, notable criminal cases included fraud prosecutions involving Bitwise Industries co-founders sentenced over $115 million fraud schemes; drug trafficking investigations leading to major seizures; firearm trafficking schemes; sex crimes against minors; hate crime solicitations via Telegram; pandemic relief fund frauds; environmental violations involving emission control systems; bank robberies using sophisticated tools like blowtorches; civil rights violations by law enforcement officers under color of law among others.
Civil case achievements included healthcare fraud settlements totaling millions from entities like Health Net Federal Services and Oroville Hospital; recoveries related to forest fire damages caused negligently by PG&E regarding Camp Fire incident among others involving COVID relief program frauds or emissions device circumvention cases resulting substantial financial settlements.
Throughout his tenure he supported community outreach programs particularly interfaith initiatives fostering strong bonds between diverse groups alongside launching hate crime task forces aimed
