U.S. Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest | U.S. Department of Justice

United States Attorney Nikolas Kerest has announced his resignation, effective January 20, 2025. Appointed by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate, Kerest has served as the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont since December 10, 2021. During his tenure, he led a team of 51 employees in enforcing federal criminal and civil laws across Vermont.

Kerest expressed gratitude for his time in public service, stating: “Representing the United States as a member of the U.S. Attorney’s Office team for over fourteen years and as its leader for the past three years has been the highlight of my career." He praised his colleagues in the U.S. Attorney's Office as "unmatched public servants" who will continue to pursue justice.

Under Kerest's leadership, efforts to address violent crime intensified. The office increased prosecutions related to illegal gun possession and supported various law enforcement initiatives throughout Vermont. Notable cases included those against Everett Simpson, Lawrence Jackson, Carl Martin, Dominique Troupe, Deven Moffitt, and Sean Fiore. Additionally, initiatives promoting safe gun storage were launched in collaboration with local partners.

The office also focused on enforcing federal civil rights laws and educating Vermonters about their rights through programs like United Against Hate. Efforts extended to outreach within faith communities and addressing civil rights violations in schools.

Significant measures were taken against elder financial fraud during Kerest's tenure. Prosecutions such as those of Nicholas Melanson and Nasir Hussain highlighted these efforts alongside educational events aimed at prevention.

The civil division under Kerest maintained a strong national reputation by successfully defending federal interests and pursuing fraud cases. Noteworthy achievements included settlements involving eBay under the Controlled Substances Act and recoveries from NextGen and Vermont defense contractors.

Kerest acknowledged partnerships with various law enforcement agencies and community groups as crucial to their success: “Support for law enforcement and collaboration is necessary to achieve a better Vermont."

First Assistant United States Attorney Michael Drescher will assume the role of Acting United States Attorney upon Kerest's departure. As of now, Kerest has not disclosed his future professional plans.
