A Baltimore man, Trevon Gardner, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for the armed carjacking of a Baltimore Police Department (BPD) detective. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher and includes five years of supervised release following his prison term.

The incident occurred on May 3, 2022, when BPD Detective Aaron Cain was at a 7-Eleven store in the Cherry Hill neighborhood. Detective Cain, wearing his training uniform and driving an unmarked BPD vehicle, was attacked by Gardner and two other males as he returned to his car. One assailant brandished a handgun and struck Cain, causing him to fall and be further assaulted while on the ground.

The attackers fled in Cain's vehicle but crashed it approximately half a mile away from the scene after flipping it onto its roof. Gardner and a juvenile accomplice were apprehended near the crash site; however, the third suspect evaded capture. A loaded Taurus 9mm handgun was found near the wrecked vehicle.

U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron announced the sentencing with FBI Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno and BPD Commissioner Richard Worley. Barron praised both the FBI and Baltimore Police Department for their roles in the investigation.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community organizations. Launched with an updated strategy on May 26, 2021, PSN emphasizes trust-building within communities, support for violence prevention efforts, strategic enforcement priorities, and results measurement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Sippel Jr., who prosecuted this case, received commendation from Barron for his work.
