A Mahto, South Dakota man has been acquitted of charges related to an alleged assault. Raymond Webb, 42, was found not guilty of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury after a three-day federal jury trial concluded on December 4, 2024, in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Webb had been indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2023. The charges stemmed from an incident reported on September 17, 2023, in rural Mahto within the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution due to the Major Crimes Act. This federal statute requires that certain serious offenses occurring in Indian country be prosecuted at the federal level rather than by state courts.

The investigation involved several agencies including the FBI, Corson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services.

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the verdict following the trial.
