Lauren Sherman, a 32-year-old resident of Winnebago, Nebraska, has been sentenced for committing child abuse in Indian Country. The sentencing took place on November 22, 2024, in a federal court in Omaha, Nebraska. Chief United States District Court Judge Robert F. Rossiter Jr. sentenced Sherman to 15 months in prison without the possibility of parole under the federal system. Following her imprisonment, she will serve a one-year term of supervised release.

The incident occurred in March 2023 when Sherman intentionally assaulted a minor child. The child's bruising was first noticed at school and subsequent investigations confirmed that Sherman was responsible for the physical assault leading to these injuries.

The case was prosecuted federally due to its classification as a felony and because it took place on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into this matter.

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced Sherman's sentencing and emphasized the severity of such offenses within federal jurisdiction.
