Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the recipients of the Seventh Annual Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing. Among those honored were Detective Matthew Newbold from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Officer Stephen Malandro, Officer Trevor Stamper, and Specialist Todd Nutbrown from the Largo Police Department in Florida.
This award highlights law enforcement officers who show exceptional dedication to building trust, engaging with communities, and enhancing public safety. "Community policing is essential to building trust and ensuring public safety," stated Attorney General Garland. He emphasized that these officers have exceeded their duties by fostering partnerships with their communities.
Detective Matthew Newbold was recognized for his work on a cold case unsolved for 36 years. His commitment over 24 years has delivered justice to many victims and their families, leaving a significant impact on his community.
Officers Malandro, Stamper, and Specialist Nutbrown were acknowledged for their efforts in transforming the lives of over 500 individuals experiencing homelessness. Their creative solutions included partnerships with homeless shelters and drafting new city ordinances.
U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg commented on the significance of collaborative work in effective policing: "Working collaboratively with communities to address concerns and reduce crime is the cornerstone of effective policing."
The awards honor state, local, and Tribal sworn officers for outstanding community policing efforts in criminal investigations, field operations, or innovations in community policing. The winners were chosen from a nationwide pool of nominees based on their achievements in creating safer communities.
