United States District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Shane McMillan, 51, from Texas, to 25 years in federal prison. The sentencing follows a jury verdict finding McMillan guilty of assault with intent to commit murder and possession of a prohibited object by a federal inmate.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that McMillan was an inmate at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County. On July 9, 2023, he followed another inmate into a cell, closed the door, and stabbed the victim approximately ten times with a shank. Another inmate heard screams and opened the cell door, allowing the victim to escape. The victim sustained multiple puncture wounds to his neck, chest, and torso and was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he eventually recovered.

During an FBI interview, McMillan admitted his intention was to kill the victim.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Prisons and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson.
