A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for drug and gun convictions. Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson announced that on December 3, 2024, David Lee Johnson III, aged 38, received a sentence of 192 months. Following his imprisonment, Johnson will be under supervised release for five years. The federal system does not allow parole.

The case stems from an incident on April 27, 2022, when officers from the Montgomery Police Department observed Johnson near Zelda Road. Upon noticing the officers, Johnson fled to a trash enclosure behind a restaurant and exited shortly after. Inside the enclosure, police discovered a firearm and various drugs, including methamphetamine. As Johnson attempted to leave the area in a vehicle, he was stopped by police and admitted to possessing both the gun and methamphetamine. Due to prior felony convictions, Johnson is prohibited from having firearms or ammunition.

On September 4, 2024, Johnson pleaded guilty to charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During sentencing, the judge highlighted Johnson's extensive criminal history and the detrimental impact of methamphetamine on the community.

The investigation was conducted by the Montgomery Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Justin L. Jones prosecuted the case.
