Justice Douglas Herndon has announced that the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has received six applications for the judicial vacancy in Department Y of the Eighth Judicial District Court. The vacancy arose following the resignation of the Honorable Stephanie Charter in mid-November.
The commission is tasked with nominating a panel of three candidates to fill this position. Interested Nevada attorneys were required to have at least ten years of legal experience, including two years practicing within Nevada. Interviews are scheduled for January 24, 2024, in Las Vegas and will be available to the public via live streaming on the Supreme Court's YouTube channel.
Following these interviews, the commission will nominate three finalists whose names will be forwarded to Governor Joe Lombardo for consideration.
The commission consists of seven permanent members: the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. The Governor and State Bar must ensure political diversity by not appointing more than two members from the same political party or county. For district court vacancies, two additional temporary members join from within the affected judicial district—one non-attorney appointed by the Governor and one attorney appointed by the State Bar—bringing total membership to nine.
