Jamal Walters, a 26-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm. This announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Walters was convicted on October 29, 2024, on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, and possession of ammunition. In addition to his prison sentence, Superior Court Judge Jason Park mandated that Walters serve three years of supervised release.
The government's evidence detailed an incident on February 7, 2022. Around 9:40 a.m., MPD officers attempted to stop Walters in the 2200 block of Savannah Street Southeast after he left a grocery store with a handgun loaded with 17 rounds. Walters fled through residential backyards in the 3400 block of 23rd Street Southeast, during which he tossed the gun over a backyard fence before being apprehended by officers who recovered the firearm.
The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Katelyn Benton and Nickolas Reck.
