Victor L. Carpenter, a resident of Mt. Zion, West Virginia, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm. The sentencing took place in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Court documents and statements revealed that Carpenter was on state probation for malicious assault and drug charges in Calhoun County when officers discovered a 16-gauge shotgun and ammunition during a probation home visit. The shotgun had been modified with a shortened stock and barrel. Due to felony convictions in Calhoun County, Carpenter is prohibited from possessing firearms.
Following his prison term, Carpenter will undergo three years of supervised release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar on behalf of the government. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the West Virginia State Police. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the proceedings.
