Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo, who has served the 4th Judicial District of Douglas County, is set to retire on January 10, 2025. In a letter addressed to the Governor, he expressed his gratitude for having served as a judge for over 24 years. "It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as Douglas County Court judge for the past 24 ½ years," Marcuzzo stated. He further added, "I have been honored to serve and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be a member of the judiciary of the great state of Nebraska."
During his time on the bench, Judge Marcuzzo participated in several judicial committees under the Nebraska County Judges Association. He was instrumental in adopting an automated case management system within the Judicial Branch and helped train staff members in its use. Additionally, he contributed to writing part of a handbook for journalists focusing on sentencing.
Judge Marcuzzo also engaged in community service through various programs such as the Nebraska State Bar Foundation’s High School Mock Trial project and Law Day Job Shadowing program aimed at fifth graders.
Serving since 2000, Marcuzzo was retained four times by voters in his position. With his retirement approaching, the Judicial Resources Commission will meet to evaluate whether his departure creates a vacancy that needs filling based on workload statistics from Douglas County court.
Nebraska's judicial power is distributed among several courts including Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, district courts, and county courts—all under administrative oversight from the Supreme Court. The state also operates separate juvenile courts and a Workers’ Compensation Court.
