Today, America First Legal (AFL) issued a statement concerning the dismissal of criminal charges against President Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The cases were dismissed following filings with both the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
According to AFL, "Special Counsel Jack Smith has been forced to drop his criminal prosecutions of President Trump." The organization noted that Mr. Smith cited a determination by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel that constitutional requirements necessitated the dismissals. Despite Mr. Smith's assertion that "the Government stands fully behind" his actions and that the dismissal was "without prejudice," AFL stated that these cases have concluded.
AFL has consistently opposed what it describes as an abuse of power in prosecuting President Trump, criticizing efforts to limit Trump's speech and challenging perceived overreach by Congress and DOJ in their investigative roles. The group also investigated alleged coordination between Mr. Smith and Vice President Harris.
The statement emphasized, "Mr. Smith and his team of attorneys each had a special duty commensurate with their unique power as prosecutors to use that power properly, without abuse." AFL accused them of participating in what it calls an unprecedented campaign against Trump by the Biden-Harris administration.
AFL pledged ongoing efforts to ensure transparency regarding communications between Mr. Smith's team and political officials from the Biden-Harris administration, asserting its commitment to protecting the justice system.
