South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has announced the arrest of Iain Douglas Carder, a 26-year-old resident of Summerville, South Carolina. Carder faces 19 charges related to the sexual exploitation of minors. The arrest was carried out by Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigators from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
According to investigators, Carder is accused of engaging in criminal sexual conduct with a minor and manufacturing and possessing files containing child sexual abuse material. He was taken into custody on November 8, 2024.
Carder is charged with seven counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor under §16-3-655(B)(2), seven counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor under §16-15-395—each count carrying a potential penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment—and five counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor under §16-15-405, which are punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment per count.
The Attorney General's Office will prosecute the case. Attorney General Wilson emphasized that "all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law."
The term child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is used instead of "child pornography" as it more accurately describes the nature of these crimes. CSAM indicates that the material involves heinous and abusive acts against children, distinguishing it from any implication that the child could be a consenting participant.
