Attorney General Kris Mayes has addressed Arizona's cities and towns following a recent ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court in the case of Gilmore v. Gallego. The ruling has implications for public entities, unions, and workers throughout the state.
In her communication, Attorney General Mayes emphasized the importance of maintaining productive relations between employers and employees while adhering to constitutional labor practices. "I encourage cities and towns to work productively with employee unions to find solutions that foster strong relationships while ensuring compliance with Arizona’s laws," stated Mayes.
The Gilmore ruling highlighted specific concerns about certain release-time provisions and suggested potential issues that could arise in future cases. However, Attorney General Mayes clarified that it does not prohibit all such arrangements.
Furthermore, she advised public entities and unions to seek legal counsel for any questions related to their agreements to ensure they comply with Arizona law.
