Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea has announced her resignation from the Minnesota Supreme Court, effective October 1, 2023. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and described her tenure as "the honor of a lifetime."

Gildea stated, “Although my decision to step down has not been an easy one, I believe this is the right moment for a transition in leadership of the Minnesota Judicial Branch.” She noted that the courts have largely recovered from pandemic impacts and highlighted recent achievements such as securing important investments and adopting a strategic plan.

Appointed initially as an associate justice on January 11, 2006, Gildea became Chief Justice on July 1, 2010. She is recognized as the second female Chief Justice in Minnesota's history and ranks as the third longest-serving Chief Justice since 1913.

During her leadership, significant changes were implemented within Minnesota’s judiciary. The transition to electronic case records through eCourtMN marked a transformative period. Additionally, remote hearings during COVID-19 ensured continued access to justice.

Gildea also spearheaded initiatives like Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) and expanded audio/visual coverage of court proceedings. Her efforts earned national recognition for protecting vulnerable adults and improving courthouse security through various programs.

Reflecting on her accomplishments, Gildea said she is "extremely proud" of what has been achieved over her tenure. Her leadership saw more than doubling of operational treatment courts in Minnesota.

As she prepares to leave her role, Gildea remarked on the collegial nature of the court: “I am thankful that the Minnesota Supreme Court has remained a collegial and collaborative body.”

Born in Plummer, Minnesota, Gildea graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with honors after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota. Before joining the Supreme Court, she served in various legal roles including Hennepin County District Court Judge.
