Baltimore art contest awards scholarships to city high school students

The District Court in Baltimore City is set to reveal the artwork of 20 student finalists at the Courting Art Baltimore awards reception. The event, scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, will take place in person and feature artworks from high school students across Baltimore City. The pieces include paintings, drawings, and other two-dimensional works centered around the theme "My Baltimore: Student Perspectives." These artworks will be reproduced for long-term display at the Eastside Courthouse on E. North Avenue.

Courting Art Baltimore aims to highlight the talents of high school students from participating public schools in Baltimore City. The initiative seeks to connect the legal community with local communities while enhancing courthouse environments to alleviate stress for visitors and litigants.

Scholarships totaling $20,000 will be awarded to top contestants for art programs or post-secondary education. A first-place scholarship of $7,500 is among these awards. Additionally, each finalist will receive a $50 gift card, and two students will gain placement in the Maryland Institute College of Art Young People’s Studio.

Key figures attending include Chief Judge John P. Morrissey of the District Court of Maryland; Administrative Judge Geoffrey G. Hengerer; Senior Judge Halee F. Weinstein; Brian D. Katzenberg and Carrie Williams, co-chairs of Bar Association of Baltimore City; Chan'nel Howard from Baltimore City Public Schools; and Julia Di Bussolo from Arts Every Day.

Participating schools are Achievement Academy at Harbor City High School, Baltimore City College High School, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove, Claremont Middle/High School, ConneXions: A Community Based Arts School, Frederick Douglass High School, Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, New Era Academy, and Western High School.
