Retired Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera was awarded the Speaker’s Medallion on April 4, 2023. This annual award is presented by the speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates to honor a citizen for their significant contributions to the state. The medallion was given by Speaker Adrienne Jones, who called Chief Judge Barbera a “trailblazer who changed the face of Maryland’s highest court.”

Chief Judge Barbera was recognized for her notable impact on Maryland. Her leadership during the pandemic, efforts to improve responses for children, minorities, and economically disadvantaged communities were highlighted. Additionally, her response to national police protests was acknowledged, particularly her recognition of systemic inequities affecting people of color in the justice system and her reaffirmation of ensuring equal justice under law. As the first woman chief judge appointed to Maryland's Court of Appeals, she aimed for a judicial system that reflected fairness and efficiency.

“It is a privilege to be honored with this lovely and significant award,” said retired Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera. “I want to thank everyone in the House Chamber as well as their colleagues in the Senate and across the state for working diligently to serve the people of Maryland in the most important way – by making the laws of this state. We are fortunate indeed to have a strong—and effective—legislative branch of our state government.”
