The EXCEL Academy Public Charter School in Prince George's County, Maryland, recently held its annual career day event virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Judge Lisa Hall Johnson, administrative judge for the District Court in Prince George’s County, played a significant role in this virtual event by sharing her journey to becoming a judge with the students.
Judge Hall Johnson expressed her enthusiasm for participating in school events, stating, "Participating in virtual career day events has been a fun and welcomed distraction during this time of uncertainty. These young students are resilient and I enjoyed their thoughtful questions."
During the session, Judge Hall Johnson discussed her legal career and path to becoming a District Court judge. The students engaged actively, asking many questions about her experiences and the necessary steps to pursue a similar career. Reflecting on the interaction, she remarked on the students' eagerness and intelligence: "The students were eager, polite, enthusiastic, and intelligent."
She further promised to visit the school when conditions allow: "I promised them that when it is safe, I will come visit and bring some of my 'judge friends,' as they called them." She encouraged others to participate in such events: "It was a rewarding experience and I hope to continue to do this very important work."
Despite restrictions due to COVID-19, Judge Hall Johnson remains committed to connecting with local youth through virtual platforms. She has also participated in other virtual career fairs at schools like National Cathedral School in Washington D.C., and Tulip Grove Elementary School in Bowie.
EXCEL Academy's principal LaTanya S. Sothern expressed gratitude for Judge Hall Johnson's involvement: “We were so very pleased to have Judge Hall Johnson take time out of her busy schedule to participate in our virtual career day.” She noted that students were captivated by Judge Hall Johnson's profession and demeanor.
As an administrative judge, Judge Hall Johnson ensures accessibility of courthouse programs for students interested in learning about careers within the Maryland judicial system. Many judges from Prince George’s County are involved similarly with educational initiatives.
EXCEL Academy's first virtual career day was part of its college and career preparatory program featuring professionals from diverse fields such as information technology, culinary arts, medicine and healthcare among others.
