Worcester County Circuit Court recently hosted a visit from Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera. The visit took place on June 27, and included meetings with judges and court staff.
"Chief Judge Barbera visited every part of our court and met with everyone," said County Administrative Judge Thomas Clay Groton III. He noted that the visit allowed staff to connect personally with the chief judge, who showed genuine interest in the court's daily operations.
During her tour, Chief Judge Barbera met with several key figures including Judge Groton, Judge Richard R. Bloxom, Judge Brian D. Shockley, Master Margaret "Peggy" Kent, and Court Administrator Richard Outten. She also visited various sections such as the criminal area and Register of Wills’ offices. Clerk of Court Stephen V. Hales introduced her to the staff.
"A visit from the state’s highest judge is an honor," Hales stated, expressing his excitement for the recognition given to hardworking court employees.
Judge Groton emphasized that this was not just a routine visit: "The chief judge spent more than two hours here, learning about us and how we operate."
Chief Judge Barbera expressed her appreciation for Worcester County Circuit Court's operations and leadership: "I learned a lot today about Worcester County Circuit Court... I was pleased to be able to thank Judge Groton in person for his excellent leadership."
Since her appointment by Governor Martin O'Malley last July, visiting state courts has been a priority for Chief Judge Barbera.
