The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has received eight applications for the judicial vacancy in Department 27 of the Eighth Judicial District Court. Chief Justice Elissa Cadish announced that the application period, which was reopened on January 22, 2024, concluded at noon on February 6, 2024. Initially, there were seven applicants as of January 11, 2024. The extended deadline resulted in one additional application.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of Judge Nancy Allf in January. The commission will nominate a panel of three candidates to fill this position. The applicants are Martina Bauhaus from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, David Reed Clayson who serves as a short trial judge and mediator, Tracy Ip Hibbetts from the Office of the District Attorney in Clark County, Alexandra McCleod from Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker, Erika Mendoza and Robert Allen Stephens both from the Office of the District Attorney in Clark County, and Timothy P. Thomas from his own law office.
Applicants were required to have at least ten years of legal experience with two years practicing in Nevada. Interviews are scheduled for February 16, 2024, in Las Vegas and will be available for public viewing via live stream on the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel. Following these interviews, three finalists will be nominated to Governor Joe Lombardo.
The commission consists of seven permanent members: the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. For district court vacancies like this one, two temporary members are added from within the judicial district—one non-attorney appointed by the Governor and one attorney by the State Bar—bringing total membership to nine.
