The Honorable Theodora Gaïtas has been officially sworn in as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The ceremony took place at the Minnesota History Center on Monday, September 16.
“I am honored to stand before you today to pledge my commitment to serving the people of Minnesota as an associate justice of the Supreme Court,” Justice Gaïtas stated during her speech. She expressed gratitude to Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan for the opportunity.
Governor Tim Walz commended Justice Gaïtas’ intellect and compassion, describing her as a suitable successor for Justice Margaret Chutich, who retired in July. “I can tell you with absolute confidence that Justice Gaïtas is the right person for this moment,” Gov. Walz said, emphasizing that both the court and Minnesotans will benefit from her service.
Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Natalie Hudson supported these sentiments, highlighting Justice Gaïtas' dedication to fairness and equity throughout her career. “Justice Gaïtas is a remarkable choice for our court—she has been on the front lines of our justice system in many roles,” Chief Justice Hudson remarked.
Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Court of Appeals Judge Keala Ede, and attorney Julie Matonich also spoke at the event in support of Justice Gaïtas. Her daughter, Clea Gaïtas Sur, performed a piece titled “Unity Waltz” composed specifically for her mother's investiture.
Before joining the Supreme Court on August 1, where she had a private swearing-in ceremony, Justice Gaïtas served four years on the Court of Appeals and two years as a judge in the Fourth Judicial District. Her previous experience includes working in private practice with Matonich Law and serving as an appellate public defender with the Office of the Minnesota Appellate Public Defender. She graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1994.
