The Honorable Theodora Gaïtas is set to be formally sworn in as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court on Monday, September 16. This ceremony will mark her official entry into the state's highest court.
Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Natalie Hudson expressed strong support for Justice Gaïtas's appointment. "Justice Gaïtas is a remarkable choice for our court," she stated. "She has been on the front lines of our justice system in many roles, always bringing her keen intellect and commitment to fairness and equity. We are incredibly fortunate to have her bring that experience and unwavering dedication to justice to our highest court."
The investiture ceremony will feature remarks from several notable figures, including Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Chief Justice Hudson, Court of Appeals Judge Keala Ede, and attorney Julie Matonich. A special musical piece composed by Justice Gaïtas’s daughter, Clea Gaïtas Sur, will also be performed in honor of the occasion.
Justice Gaïtas has a substantial legal background. Before joining the Supreme Court, she served four years on the Court of Appeals and two years as a judge in the Fourth Judicial District. Her career also includes private practice with Matonich Law and work as an appellate public defender with the Office of the Minnesota Appellate Public Defender. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1994.
Chief Justice Hudson highlighted Justice Gaïtas's compassionate approach: “It’s not just her impressive career that stands out—what truly distinguishes Justice Gaïtas is her compassionate approach to the law,” she said. “She understands that behind every case, there are real people with real lives, and she is committed to ensuring that every Minnesotan, regardless of their background, receives the fairness and dignity they deserve.”
Justice Gaïtas officially joined the Supreme Court on August 1 following the retirement of Justice Margaret Chutich. A private swearing-in ceremony was held on that date.
