Changes to court rules in Maryland concerning guardianships will take effect on January 1, 2018. These modifications are designed to protect the personal and financial interests of vulnerable individuals who require assistance due to age, disease, or disability. The new rules will impact court-appointed guardians, guardianships, and attorneys.
Mary Ellen Barbera, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals, stated, "The Judiciary is committed to protecting the rights of older Marylanders and vulnerable children and adults whose matters bring them before our courts." She emphasized that these rule changes aim to prevent neglect, abuse, and financial exploitation. Barbera also expressed gratitude towards the Guardianship Work Group for their efforts in advocating for these changes and improving court processes.
The updated rules include resources available on the Judiciary website's new Maryland Guardianship section. This section provides information such as an orientation video for prospective guardians, links to training programs, and new forms. The full report from the Guardianship Work Group can also be accessed online.
